Platform economies: Beyond the North-South divide

Platform economies are depicted as the foundation for a new era of economic production. This transpires through incorporation digital technologies and algorithmic operations into heart financial practices. However, different assumptions made about effects platforms depending on geographical location. While approached inherent to processes financialization globally, they reduced inclusion when referencing ‘Global South’. Analyses one-way-vector – Global North South overlook variability, limits, responses financialization. In contrast, focus market devices illustrates specificities value creation. An example this is ‘the float’, form generated by mobile telecommunication operators, money issuers, commercial banks in Africa. Through lens, we see instances both subjugation autonomization, evidence that fault lines production ambiguous obscured North/Global frame.
